Mercedes-AMG has a completely new GT 4-Door Coupe in the offing for 2026, a high-performance electric liftback that will be joined by a roomier and higher-riding brother. Currently referred to as the GT SUV, the newcomer has come back into focus with production-intent exterior lighting and less camouflage.

Boasting a three-pointed star lighting signature for the daytime running lights, the zero-emission thriller also shows three-pointed stars in the rear lights. The round taillights appear to be shared with the liftback, and the design of the front end has a few similarities of its own.

Potentially codenamed X591 as opposed to C590 for the full-electric alternative to the GT 4-Door Coupe, the GT SUV features a coupe-like roofline that tapers aggressively toward the rear liftgate. Sitting noticeably lower than the EQS SUV, the yet-unnamed model should be revealed by year’s end for model year 2027.

Similar to the GT 4-Door Coupe, the GT SUV’s monolithic design language hides a dedicated high-performance electric vehicle platform. The AMG.EA will further spawn a third model in the latter part of 2027 for model year 2028, with said model to be a coupe SUV with an even more dramatic roofline.

While two electric high-performance SUVs may seem like overkill, bear in mind that sport utility vehicles account for more than half of the AMG sub-brand’s worldwide sales. This, in turn, prompted the board to prioritize a coupe SUV over a hypercar.

Much like the all-electric GT 4-Door Coupe, the X591 minimizes turbulences with door handles that remain flush with the bodywork and wipers that are tucked beneath the trailing edge of the hood. Out back, the centerpiece is an electrically deployable rear spoiler.

A relatively flat underbody is also featured, a floor that kicks up toward the rear bumper to reduce lift at high speeds. Active aero flaps integrated into the lower rear fascia may be present as well, though it’s hard to tell for certain at this point in the development process.

To mask its substantial wheelbase, Mercedes-AMG is certain to make four-wheel steering standard on the GT SUV. A clever 48-volt suspension is more than certain to happen as well, an active suspension designed to manage body roll, pitch, and dive as well as technically possible.

A triple-motor setup with axial-flux motors developed by YASA will easily result in over 1,000 mechanical horsepower, though some voices expect a megawatt or thereabouts. Lighter and more powerful than conventional drive units, these motors will be powered by a specialized high-performance battery.

Cylindrical cells with silicon anodes are on the menu, along with an 800-volt electrical system. Given the wheelbase of the GT SUV, the battery is projected to pack over 100 kilowatt-hours of usable energy.

Although no pictures of the interior are currently available, the GT SUV is most certainly hiding a techy cabin with lots of touchscreen interfaces and go-faster touches. On the management and infotainment side of the biz, look forward to the Mercedes-Benz Operating System and the latest iteration of MBUX.
