Mercedes has been quiet since May 2022, when it first revealed plans for the ultra-luxury Mythos vehicle. The three-pointed star brand announced the first model’s arrival in 2025 using the same teaser graphic it used in its 2023 financial results declaration. The first is a fastback with nacelles located behind the seats that evoke the SL-class. Both an AMG and a Maybach version of the next-gen roadster are currently under development. The Maybach-branded SL is set to hit the market first. Some may recall that in the middle of 2022, Mercedes-chief designer Wagener’s teased a red Mercedes-Maybach SL Concept with a centre vertical fin and several double M insignia engraved onto a black hood.

Highly Exclusive: Mercedes Maybach SL Mythos Speedster Unveiled!

We already know what the first-ever Mercedes-Maybach SL looks like. We’ve seen a few spy shots of different prototypes, and we also came across a few leaked images. As for the model’s official unveiling, it’s scheduled for this Sunday (August 18) during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Mercedes-Maybach worked its magic on the car’s front and rear ends. The luxury roadster has different bumpers, an exclusive grille, dedicated badging, and some special touches on the sides. We also expect it to launch with different hues for the rag top and an expanded color palette. It will be interesting to see if the company’s luxury division also gives it two-tone paint finishes, yet our bet would be on yes, next to exclusive wheels.

The magic will happen on the inside, where it will offer superior quality next to the Mercedes-AMG SL family. Look for high-end leather upholstery offered in various shades, Maybach embossing on the seats, dedicated sub-menus on the two main screens, and perhaps a few high-end touches, like a small cooler and perhaps a pair of champagne flutes. Hey, this is, after all, a Maybach, and it should boast many upgrades over the performance-focused AMG SLs.

Power is likely to be supplied solely by V8 engines, and while you and I would wish for a V12, it won’t happen. Maybach’s only V12-powered car in production is the S 680 4Matic, whose twin-turbo 6.0L engine develops 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) and 621 hp (630 ps/463 kW). The Maybach SL is expected in the S 580 and S 680 configurations. That’s what the rumor mill claims, anyway, and both will likely use the ubiquitous 4.0L V8 with twin turbos, albeit in different power stages.

Mind you, the Mercedes-Maybach SL is not the only high-end take on the AMG-developed roadster. Mercedes has also confirmed an even more luxurious model that will be part of the Mythos sub-brand. This vehicle is expected to make its debut sometime next year, with a two-seat configuration (standard SL is a 2+2), and hearsay claims the three-pointed star brand might have already unveiled it to its VIP clientele, though it’s only a rumor.

While the Mercedes-Maybach SL is believed to start at around $200k in our market, the Mythos variant will be significantly more expensive. Details surrounding it are yet unknown, and we also have no idea of what it will look like. Therefore, the rendered model has nothing in common with the real thing. Still, it is a stunner that deserves its 15 minutes of digital fame, and it looks like an instant collectible. Hopefully, these CGIs are not far from the actual Mythos SL, though only time will answer this question. Meanwhile, do you like it? We sure as heck do!
