Mercedes-Benz 280 SE AMG V8 & Subtle Restoration Work

A North Carolina shop gave the 1969 Mercedes 280SE an AMG V8 and subtle restoration work, then quietly attached a $500,000 price tag.

All too often, restomods tend to follow a predictable script. Drop in a modern powertrain, add contemporary tech to the cabin, tweak the exterior with fresh lights, bumpers, and grilles, and call it a day. Sometimes the result works. Other times, the original character quietly disappears in the process. The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE rebuilt by Retro Designs takes a different approach.

Operating out of North Carolina, Retro Designs set out to modernize the classic Mercedes without sanding away what made it special in the first place. Under the surface, however, the changes are substantial. In fact, this could very well be the quickest 280SE ever assembled.

The biggest change made is to the engine. Gone is the original mill, replaced by the same 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 found in the more modern Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG. When new, that unit produced up to 367 hp and 376 lb-ft (510 Nm) of torque, a substantial jump over what the 280SE originally offered. There’s also an all-new wiring harness, a custom fuel tank, a radiator, and a stainless steel exhaust.

Supporting that extra output is a completely reworked foundation. Retro Designs rebuilt the 280SE around a bespoke chassis fitted with revised suspension components and upgraded Brembo brakes to keep the added performance in check.

Retaining That Classic Charm
Importantly, the exterior of the 280SE hasn’t been spoiled. In fact, it looks much like any other example, though it has been refinished in a new shade of Axalta Chromax XP Irish Green paint and now rides on a special set of billet wheels that cost $20,000, engineered as floating hubcaps with stationary logos that remain upright in motion.

The original chrome front and rear bumpers have been retained, as has the huge chrome grille, driver’s side wing mirror, and the original lights. There are no modern LED lights here.

Similarly, the interior is mostly original. Retro Designs has re-upholstered the cabin in new brown leather and added new switchgear, along with updated wooden accents throughout. The transmission tunnel, steering wheel, and shifter are all original, and the first thing that makes this 280SE different is the small JL Audio head unit positioned in the center of the dashboard. Look closer, and you’ll find an Alcantara headliner, Focal speakers, one-off Dakota gauges in the original cluster, and a new Vintage Air climate control system.

“Our team preserved its ageless presence while completely reengineering the car underneath to create what we believe is the fastest 280SE ever built,” Retro Designs general manager Daniel Valjevac said. “While the performance is incredible, what truly sets this car apart is how Retro Designs flexed its manufacturing expertise to create a bespoke build that is truly elevated at every level, down to the smallest detail.”

Retro Designs describes this reimagined 280SE as a strict one-off, and if you want it, you will need deep pockets. The company has listed the car for sale with an asking price of $500,000.
