South Korea is facing a rising wave of concern over the safety of electric vehicles (EVs) following a series of high-profile fires. The most recent incident involved a Mercedes-Benz EQE, which ignited in an underground parking garage in Incheon, causing extensive damage and sending over 20 people to the hospital. The fire, which started with white smoke seen on CCTV, quickly escalated and even affected the building’s power grid, leaving nearly 500 households without electricity and water days after the incident. This situation highlights the significant challenges posed by EV fires, which burn at much higher temperatures and are more difficult to extinguish than fires involving traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

Electric vehicle fires present unique challenges for firefighters due to the intense heat they generate, sometimes reaching up to 5,000°F, compared to the 1,500°F typical of gasoline vehicle fires.
