Mercedes-Benz VLE-Class combines EV powertrains, flexible seating, and limousine-style amenities in a segment luxury brands have largely avoided.

A Luxury Van Arrives
Luxury automakers have traditionally avoided the minivan segment in the United States, but Mercedes-Benz is preparing to test that convention with the 2028 VLE-Class. While the company prefers to call it a “grand limousine,” the vehicle is effectively a luxury-focused electric minivan aimed at families, executives, and chauffeur services. It will mark the first purpose-built passenger van the automaker intends to sell in the American market, rather than adapting a commercial vehicle platform as it did with previous models.

Moving Beyond Work Vans
Mercedes has offered vans in North America before, including the commercial-oriented Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the now-discontinued Mercedes-Benz Metris. Those models were primarily designed for cargo or business use. The VLE-Class represents a different approach, built from the start as a passenger vehicle focused on comfort and advanced technology rather than commercial capability.

A Different Take on Luxury Transport
The concept behind the VLE challenges the dominance of large luxury SUVs in chauffeur duty. Vans offer advantages in interior space and accessibility, particularly with sliding doors and a lower step-in height. Mercedes previewed the idea with its Mercedes-Benz Vision V concept, suggesting that high-end passenger vans, already popular in parts of Asia, could appeal to buyers seeking a more spacious alternative to traditional luxury vehicles.

Exterior Design and Size
The VLE adopts a modern, aerodynamic look with an illuminated grille surround, streamlined bodywork, and flush-mounted door handles. Dual power sliding doors feature fully retractable windows, while the rear design incorporates arc-shaped taillights that extend across the top of the liftgate. At roughly 209 inches long, the standard model is slightly longer than mainstream minivans such as the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Kia Carnival, and Chrysler Pacifica. A longer version stretching nearly 216 inches is also planned, and that variant is expected to be the one sold in the United States.

Flexible Interior Layout
Inside, the VLE can be configured with six to eight seats depending on the layout. Buyers can choose from traditional benches or individual captain’s chairs in the second and third rows. Some seating arrangements allow the middle-row seats to rotate and face the rear passengers, while higher-end “Grand Comfort” seats include extendable leg rests, tray tables, massage functions, and integrated pillows. Manually adjustable seats can be removed or repositioned easily thanks to integrated wheels, while power-operated versions can be controlled through the infotainment system, door switches, or even a smartphone app.

Screens, Sound, and Connectivity
Technology plays a major role in the VLE’s cabin. An optional MBUX Superscreen stretches across the dashboard and combines three displays: a 10.25-inch driver instrument cluster, a 14-inch central infotainment system, and a 14-inch passenger display. Rear passengers can access a ceiling-mounted 31.3-inch screen with 8K resolution and split-screen capability, along with an integrated camera designed for video conferencing. Additional features include a 22-speaker Burmester audio system, wireless charging pads, folding tables, and optional heated or cooled storage compartments.

Electric Platform and Range
The VLE rides on Mercedes’ new Van.EA electric architecture. Early models will use a 115-kWh battery pack paired with either a single front-mounted motor or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The VLE 300 produces around 268–272 horsepower and is expected to deliver up to roughly 700 kilometers (435 miles) of WLTP range, which would translate to an estimated 370 miles under EPA testing. A more powerful VLE 400 4MATIC will follow with 409 horsepower and a projected 0–60 mph time of about 6.4 seconds.

Charging and Driving Technology
The platform features an 800-volt electrical system capable of DC fast charging at over 300 kW, allowing approximately 221 miles of range to be added in about 15 minutes under ideal conditions. Air suspension can adjust ride height by about 1.5 inches and uses navigation data to anticipate road conditions. Rear-wheel steering, turning the back wheels up to seven degrees, helps reduce the turning circle to about 35.7 feet, improving maneuverability despite the vehicle’s large footprint.

Advanced Driver Assistance
Mercedes equips the VLE with an extensive sensor suite including 12 ultrasonic sensors, 10 cameras, and five radar units. These feed into the available MB.Drive Assist Pro system, which enables hands-free driving in certain city and highway scenarios. Additional automated functions include self-parking capability and a system that allows the van to retrace its path in reverse to exit tight spaces such as long driveways.

A New Segment Test
Mercedes plans to offer the VLE in standard, AMG Line, and Exclusive trims, with wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 22 inches. The vehicle is expected to go on sale in the United States in 2027, with pricing yet to be announced. Its arrival will effectively test whether American buyers, long accustomed to luxury SUVs, are willing to embrace a premium van designed with limousine-style comfort in mind.
