Nearly 18 months after its European refresh, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance has finally landed stateside. Pricing details are still under wraps, but it will take its place at the top of the lineup alongside the GT 43 4-Door Coupe and GT 53 4-Door Coupe, which start at $101,100 and $112,000, respectively.

Visual changes are quite minimal, and many probably wouldn’t even notice them. One of the most obvious changes is the tweaked front grille, which now includes a lower section painted in gloss black as if the car is wearing black lipstick. The gaping wide air intakes of the previous model have also been abandoned, and in their place sits more subtle intakes, not dissimilar to those of the second-gen two-door AMG GT Coupe.

Most of the good stuff remains unchanged. Like the older model, it continues to use AMG’s flagship 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 in combination with a powerful electric motor, which adds an extra 201 hp and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm). The combined output is rated at an impressive 831 hp and 1,032 lb-ft (1,399 Nm). Eat your heart out, BMW M5.

Working alongside a fully variable all-wheel-drive system and nine-speed automatic transmission, the powerful hybrid V8 sends the super sedan to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.8 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph (317 km/h). Like the older car, this new one remains a plug-in hybrid, and the 4.8 kWh battery pack provides a limited all-electric driving range.

Pricing Remains A Mystery
While plug-in hybrids have slowed down in sales across much of the market, one appealing feature of the GT 63 S E Performance is the four-stage brake regeneration system. Like an EV, this includes a one-pedal driving mode that can provide up to 100 kW of energy back into the battery pack.

Several minor changes have been made to the cabin. These include updated AMG-specific displays on the MBUX infotainment system. An AMG Performance steering wheel also comes standard across the range.
