Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third-generation CLA, marking a major shift in its compact luxury lineup. Arriving first as an electric vehicle (EV), followed later by a hybrid version, the CLA boasts a redesigned exterior, an AI-powered infotainment system, and notable efficiency gains.
1. The Styling
The new CLA follows the design language previewed by the Concept CLA-Class in 2023. While retaining its signature four-door coupe silhouette, the model has grown slightly to accommodate an underfloor battery. The wheelbase has expanded by 2.4 inches, and overall length has increased by 1.3 inches, enhancing interior space. Its sleek design includes a “radiant face panel” adorned with 142 illuminated stars, replacing the traditional grille. At the rear, the taillights incorporate a three-pointed-star pattern connected by 40 illuminated louvres.
2. Powertrain and Performance
At launch, two electric versions will be available:
– CLA 250+: A rear-wheel-drive variant with a 268-horsepower motor, capable of reaching 60 mph in about 6.6 seconds.
– CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology: An all-wheel-drive dual-motor configuration producing 349 horsepower, achieving 0-60 mph in approximately 4.8 seconds.
Both models use an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery and Mercedes’ first 800-volt electrical system, allowing DC fast charging up to 320 kW. In just 10 minutes, a charge can add around 202 miles of range.
3. Interior: Screens and AI Dominate
The CLA’s cabin emphasizes a minimalist yet high-tech aesthetic. The “Superscreen” spans the dashboard, featuring a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, a 14-inch center touchscreen, and an optional 14-inch passenger display. The infotainment system integrates Google Maps for navigation and employs AI-powered voice assistance via ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing.
While front-seat comfort improves, rear passengers experience mixed results. The raised battery floor reduces foot space, though the panoramic glass roof helps create an airy atmosphere. The cargo area includes a small 2.5-cubic-foot front trunk (frunk) in addition to the main 14.3-cubic-foot trunk.
4. Hybrid Model Incoming
For buyers not ready to go fully electric, Mercedes will introduce a hybrid CLA in 2026. This model will use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. An integrated 27-horsepower electric motor enables short-distance electric driving.
5. Market Positioning and Competition
Mercedes positions the CLA as its most advanced entry-level offering, competing in the under-$60,000 EV segment alongside the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. With its cutting-edge technology and bold design updates, the CLA aims to redefine expectations for compact luxury sedans.
