The second generation Mercedes G-Class 4×4² will be launched in 2022 and will be an AMG model, informs the German magazine auto motor und sport.

In the fall of 2014, Mercedes introduced a kind of Tyrannosaurus Rex: Mercedes G-Class 6×6 with portal axles that raises the ground clearance from 210 mm to 460 mm. This 5,875 meter (+1,213 mm compared with normal G-Class) ultra-luxury pickup truck G-Class with a 4.22 m wheelbase (+1,170 mm longer than the G-Class) had a 5.5-liter AMG V8 engine with 544 HP and costs about half a million euros.

It was too big and too expensive for a bigger production. But the idea of portal axles was taken over and a year later, at 2015 Geneva Motorshow, Mercedes presented a show car G 500 4×4², which was entered later in series production. The G 500 4×4² was half the price of the G 63 AMG 6×6 and quickly became a legend and a much-desired collector’s item.

That’s why Mercedes has decided to offer a successor based on the new generation G-Class, or so the photos of the prototype presented by the German magazine auto motor und sport suggest.

Although its predecessor was called the G 500 4×4² but had a 4-liter V8 AMG engine, it looks like the new model will bear the name of Mercedes sports division. The proof is represented by the typical AMG spoiler and the side emblems that are still hidden. But unlike the G 63, the exhaust pipes will not come out to the side to not affect the ground clearance.

But as with the old model, the wheel arches will be strongly flared, probably with carbon fiber protections, on the roof will be mounted an expansive rack that can be reached on the back ladder. There will also be additional lights on the roof and, unlike the G-Class, the spare wheel will not be covered. The V8 AMG engine will most likely be found under the hood in its most powerful form. In the G 63 it develops 585 HP and 850 Nm and we expect the G 500 4×4² to have at least the same power.

The new Mercedes G 500 4×4² will be launched in the summer of 2022 as we announced when we presented the 2022 new Mercedes models. As the power has increased significantly from 422 to at least 585 HP, it is expected that the price will be higher and we estimate that it will be around 300,000 euros compared with 250,000 for the first genweration Mercedes G 500 4×4².
