There is a new kid on the Mercedes-AMG block. It’s called the CLE 53 and is a sporty model, but not the most exciting version of the series that fans of the Affalterbach brand were probably waiting for.

Presented at the beginning of the month, it comes with a six-pot featuring new piston rings, improved combustion chambers, a new exhaust gas turbo, and enhanced injection. Assisting it is a 48V system that slightly boosts the output and torque.

According to the official spec sheet, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 has a total of 442 hp (449 ps/330 kW) available from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm. The thrust is rated at 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) on Overboost and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) without it. The 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system is coupled with a nine-speed auto ‘box, and the sporty coupe needs 4.2 seconds to 62 mph (100 kph). The maximum speed is 155 mph (250 kph) or 168 mph (270 kph) should you check the AMG Driver’s Pack box on the options list.

Although only a few drivers will use it, it has a drift mode that turns it into a rear-wheel drive car. Additional driving modes include the Slipper, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, as well as the Individual that lets those behind the wheel adjust various parameters to their liking. Rear-wheel steering is standard, and the model features the AMG Ride Control suspension, too. As for the visuals, it comes with the Panamericana grille, flared arches, different bumpers, and standard 19-inch alloys, upgradable to 20-inch sets.

For now, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 comes in a single body style: a two-door coupe. The convertible should gain this specification as well, and thinking outside the box, one rendering artist has digitally turned it into a Shooting Brake. Mind you, it is a real Shooting Brake, too, not just a sporty-looking station wagon with a sloping roofline, as it is presented in a three-door configuration, with a tailgate at the rear that opens up into a more generous cargo area.

X-Tomi Design on Facebook stands behind this digital illustration. The hypothetical CLE 53 Shooting Brake has a longer roofline, larger three-quarter windows, and redesigned rear fenders and pillars. It also sits a bit closer to the ground than the real thing, yet other than that, it remains the same. Thus, it retains the front-end design, the vents behind the front wheels, the same side skirts, doors, placement of the fuel filler cap, back end, wheels, and so on.

While it will never happen, as the three-pointed star isn’t willing to risk making a model that would not sell in plenty of numbers to make it viable, it remains an interesting proposal. We think it looks far better than the coupe. But is it something you’d be interested in, and would you consider buying one if they made it?
