Mercedes-Benz EQB It’s Dead!

The electric version of Mercedes-Benz’s GLB-Class had an unusually short shelf life. Rather than using the latest and greatest platform, it opted for the MFA chassis that debuted way back in 2011. That technology must have caught up with it, as the EQB will be phased out after 2025.

A company spokesperson confirmed to our colleagues at InsideEVs that the EQB “has reached the end of its planned lifecycle and therefore will not be offered in the US or Canada after model year 2025.” They emphasized, “Mercedes-Benz remains fully committed to electrification and the largest product offensive in the history of the brand is just around the corner. As announced at IAA Mobility 2023, Mercedes-Benz will also introduce two SUVs based on this new architecture.”

So a replacement for the EQB is coming, and surely it will be more expensive than the outgoing model. As it stands, the 2025 EQB starts at $54,200, including destination. That nets you a 70.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack with DC fast charging capable of a max of 100 kilowatts. On a full charge, the EPA rates the EQB with a driving range between 205 and 251 miles, depending on whether you add all-wheel drive, more power, and larger wheels.

Although the GLB-Class has been around for years, Mercedes debuted the EQB for the 2021 model year. It is one of just two Affalterbach electric offerings that could have up to three rows. Now that production has ended, your only option for a seven-seater EV is the EQS, so long as you tick the available third row in the configurator.

As for a future purchase, the two new SUVs are slated to launch on the brand’s latest MMA chassis, designed to accommodate both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The redesigned CLA showcases the new platform with highlights including an 800-volt architecture with faster charging speeds and revamped interior tech that uses Mercedes’s in-house operating system.

A date has not been set. However, the announcement of the EQB’s fate indicates that its replacement will come sooner rather than later.
