Mercedes-Benz has just kicked off production of the all-electric EQS 580 4MATIC at its factory in Pune, India, making it the 14th Mercedes model to be produced in India and the first plant outside of Germany to build the EV.

Underpinning the locally-made EQS 580 4MATIC is a 107.8 kWh battery pack using 400-volt technology and sending power through a pair of electric motors. All up, the car is good for 385 kW (516 hp) and 855 Nm (631 lb-ft) of torque, allowing it to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds and continue through to a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph).

Not only does the EQS 580 4MATIC deliver impressive levels of performance but it becomes India’s longest-range EV with a range of up to 677 km (421 miles) under real-world conditions and 857 km (533 miles) according to the Automotive Search Association of India’s test standards.

“The EQS 580 4MATIC is our first locally manufactured EV in India and will play a pivotal role in driving our ambitious EV plans for the market,” managing director and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz India, Martin Schwenk, said. “It is a perfect blend of technology, luxury and safety, pioneering numerous tech features for our customers. India is the first country outside Germany to manufacture the EQS 580 4MATIC, and this unique distinction underpins Mercedes-Benz India’s deep customer commitment and long-term vision for developing the luxury EV market here.”

With the local launch of the EQS, Mercedes-Benz India now builds series Mercedes models, AMG vehicles, Maybach-branded models, and EVs under the same roof.

To complement the launch of the EV, the car manufacturer says it will establish an ultra-fast charging network that will span 80 per cent of India by the end of 2022. This network will be restricted to Mercedes-Benz customers for the first year and provide 24/7 charging for free.

Local pricing for the EQS 580 4MATIC kicks off at 15.5 million rupees ($188,153).
