With a powertrain derived directly from its Formula One program, the Mercedes-AMG One was always going to be fast. But now, it can officially call itself the fastest production car ever to lap the historic Monza Circuit in Italy.
Mercedes-AMG announced on Twitter this week that the mid-engine hypercar has managed to lap the track in 1:43.902. That’s the second record to its name, after it set a production car lap record at the Nürburgring in late 2022.
Unlike the German track, there are fewer lists of production car lap records around for Monza. Fortunately, the lap time was so fast, that we can look at times from racing series to see how impressive the Mercedes-AMG One‘s feat was.
Naturally, the hypercar isn’t as quick as the F1 car its 1.6-liter engine comes from (frankly, it would be a little embarrassing for the sport if it was). Lewis Hamilton lapped the same track in 1:18.89 seconds in his Mercedes W11 in 2020.
However, that time does put the Mercedes-AMG One just a few tenths of a second behind the 2022 Dallara 320, an open-wheel racecar that competes in the Euroformula Open series, per Wikipedia. It is also a few tenths faster than an LMP3 racecar in 2020.
According to Fastestlaps.com, the quickest times for production cars are nearly 10 seconds slower than this latest achievement. A modified R35 Nissan GT-R managed to lap the track in 1:52.59, while the Ferrari LaFerrari could only post a best time of 1:59.00 at the track. The Mercedes-AMG One is a very fast car, is what I’m trying to say.
The record was set by Maro Engel, the AMG ambassador and pro driver who also set the car’s lap record-breaking time at the Nürburgring, reports Evo.
Powered by a 1.6-liter V6 and four electric motors, the Mercedes-AMG One has access to 1,049 hp (782 kW / 1,063 PS) in “Race Plus” mode. It also has an adaptive suspension and aerodynamics, to help it be fast in more than just a straight line. Just 275 examples of the car are being built.
